Life in the UK Test: free practice test

A free Life in the UK Test practice test, with a fresh set of questions every day and nothing to sign up for. Every question is written from the current edition of the official handbook — and if you would rather be taught it than tested on it, there is an audio course in your own language, closer to an audiobook you can learn from than to a question bank.

How this practice test works

It mirrors the real exam rather than a quiz app. Every set is 24 questions in 45 minutes, and you need 18 correct to pass. Some questions ask you to choose two answers, exactly as the real test does — and there, as there, a half-correct answer scores nothing.

One set per day. The set is tied to your device and to today's date, so refreshing does not deal you an easier hand. That is deliberate: a test you can re-roll until it flatters you tells you nothing about whether you are ready.

Why we do not show you the correct answers

You get your score and the number of every question you got wrong — not the answers. That is the honest line between a free practice test and a paid course: this page tells you whether you are ready; the course tells you what you got wrong and why. Every question in the course has a recorded explanation for the right answer and for the wrong one, in your own language.

The real exam, in numbers

• 24 questions in 45 minutes, pass mark 75% — that is 18 correct.
• £50 per attempt. You may rebook as many times as you need, and you pay each time.
• Booked online only, through gov.uk, at least 3 days in advance. There are over 30 test centres in the UK.
• The name on your booking must match the ID you book with, exactly.
• You need the test for indefinite leave to remain and for British citizenship. You take it once.
• It is taken in English; separate arrangements exist for Welsh and Scottish Gaelic.

Our questions follow the current edition

Every question comes from the official handbook, Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents. The real question bank is not published, so nobody can sell you "the real questions" — every provider writes its own from the handbook. What differs is which handbook.

The free copies circulating online are the 2013 printing. Since then the publisher has removed whole sections, and they have gone from the exam with them. We bought a current edition and checked every question against it, page by page. See what is no longer on the test — with the publisher's own statement quoted in full.

Study in your own language

The exam is in English, so the questions stay in English. The teaching does not have to be. Thirty-seven audio modules cover the whole handbook in your language, with 628 questions in English and a readiness counter that tracks how many you answered without reaching for the translation.

Questions people ask

Is this practice test really free?

Yes. No account, no email address, no card. The paid course is a separate thing and you can ignore it entirely.

How many questions are in the real Life in the UK Test?

24, in 45 minutes, and you need 18 right to pass.

Can I take more than one practice test a day?

Not here — one set per day, per device. Re-rolling a test until you like the result is how people talk themselves into booking too early.

What happens if I fail the real test?

You can rebook as many times as you need. Each attempt costs £50 again. There is no waiting period imposed and no cap on attempts.

Do I have to take the test at all?

Not if you are under 18 or 65 and over. There are also exemptions on medical grounds, with evidence. What happens after you pass covers the rest of the route: the reference number, ILR against citizenship, absence limits and the ceremony.
