Life in the UK Test 2026: which handbook to study from
Search for the test and you will be offered a 2026 handbook, a 2026 PDF and 2026 questions. Before you buy any of them, one fact saves you money: there is no new official edition for 2026.
1. The official book has not changed edition
The exam is set from one book: Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents, third edition. That edition has not been replaced. What does change is the printing — the publisher issues numbered reprints with lists of corrections, and those lists are where the real changes live.
So a book advertised as 2026 is one of two things: the same official third edition, relisted by a seller with the year in the title — or a third-party study guide written by someone else, which is legal and often useful, but is not the Home Office book.
Neither is a scandal. Just know which one you are buying, and do not pay twice for the same text because the year on the cover changed.
2. What genuinely changed
The meaningful changes are removals, not additions. Whole sections have been taken out of the handbook and have left the exam with them: European Union membership, and the sections on Queen Elizabeth II and the monarchy. The publisher states outright that you will not be asked about them.
Some names also changed: the Welsh Assembly is now the Senedd, the literary prize is the Booker Prize without the "Man", and Twitter is X. See the full list, with the publisher's statement quoted in full.
3. About the free 2026 PDF
The free copies circulating online are almost always the 2013 first printing, whatever year is written on the page offering them. You can tell in under a minute:
Search the file for "Border Agency". If it appears, your copy is old — that agency stopped existing in 2013 and the name is gone from the current edition.
Search for "Senedd". If nothing is found, your copy is old.
Search for "31 January 2020". The sentence about leaving the EU should be there.
Studying an old copy is not a small loss. You memorise material that cannot be examined, and you learn one institution under a name that no longer exists.
4. What to actually use in 2026
- The official handbook, current printing — buy it new rather than second-hand, or check the printing against the three searches above.
- Practice in English. The exam is read, on a screen, in English. A free practice test tells you where you actually are: same format, same 75% pass mark, no account.
- Something that explains it, if the book alone is heavy going — which for most people it is, because it was written to be complete, not to be learnable.
